Most significant mineralogical specimen of the Ambras Collection. During the course of the 19th century, this piece, together with large portions of the mineral collection which were transferred to Vienna during the course of the Napoleonic Wars, was included in the exhibition in the Lower Belvedere. After the liquidation of the collection, the emerald sample was restored to the Ambras Collection together with other mineralogical objects in 1880. However, at the decree of the Comptroller of the Royal Household, the objects were returned to the Imperial Museum in Vienna in 1881.

Bedeutendstes mineralogisches Exponat der Ambraser Sammlung. Auch dieses Stück gelangte zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts, als auch große Teile der Mineraliensammlung im Zuge der Napoleonischen Kriege nach Wien transferiert wurden, in die Ausstellung ins Untere Belvedere. Nach Auflösung der Sammlung wurde die Smaragdstufe, mit anderen Teilen der mineralogischen Objekte der Ambraser Sammlung 1880 nach Ambras zurückgestellt, doch 1881 auf Anordnung des Obersthofmeisteramtes wieder nach Wien an das k.k. Hofmuseum übergeben.
