The Augustine Wing (of the Imperial Library), actually the "New Augustine Corridor", comprises a complex of several halls, the construction of which began during the reign of Emperor Franz I. (Franz Stephan of Lothringen), and which was intended to house the imperial collection. This location replaced the previous corridor already built in the middle of the 16th century, which led from the Schweizerhof to the church of St. Augustine and the palace of Archduke Karl. The corridor extended from the southern corner of the oldest section of the Imperial Palace - the Schweizerhof - and ran closely parallel to the Imperial Library towards the current Albertina, which in those days consisted of a palace complex comprising the buildings of the abandoned Dutch and Italian missions and which served, among other things, as the home of the brother-in-law of the Empress, Prince Karl von Lothringen.
