Pliny the Elder 23-79 AD the greatest scholar of his century. Pliny leaves behind him the 37 tomes of the Naturalis Historia, an imposing collection of scientic notices gathered through reading 2000 volumes, and dediced to the Emperor Titus. It covers cosmology, geology, botanics, zoology and finally mineralogy with a brief but precious "history of ancient art".
