In the 17th century, pebbles were found in which the veins of calcite had formed, under Heavens' influence, letters of the alphabet: Litterae lapidibus inscriptae.  

It was held that the rivers and pebbly beaches released them to Man so that they might be arranged into sentences in praise of the supreme Creator.
